I work for Fedex, a company that ships freight to every country on the planet. Though most American companies are closed for business on Thanksgiving, Fedex cannot close. The rest of the world is going about its everyday business (which includes shipping freight). Here in America we take a day off to celebrate Thanksgiving. We celebrate it because we have been blessed. Perhaps we have been blessed because we take the time to celebrate it. Below I have copied the original Thanksgiving Declaration that was delivered by George Washington in 1789. Our country was very young when Washington gave this speech but his words show that our nation's founders understood the secret of their success and were not shy about acknowledging it. WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness: NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;-- for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us. And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best. GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine. (signed) G. Washington Source: The Massachusetts Centinel, Wednesday, October 14, 1789 While you are celebrating Thanksgiving don't forget that the day is meant to be "a day of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer... devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be" Posted: 21 November 2007

"40 Days to a New Beginning" is a concentrated, focused period of 40 days (Feb.28-April 8) during which the person will commit to prayer (and if possibly some type of fasting). Jeremiah 29: 11-14 says, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek Me and find me. When you seek Me with all your heart, I will be found by you, declares the Lord." (ESV) The goal for "40 Days" is to discover: A New Hope- Jer.29:11 A New Church- Jer.29:12 A New You- Jer.29: 13-14 What will you pray for? Sunday- Church Unity & Gathering to Worship Monday- Your Family Tuesday-People Without Christ Wednesday- Missions we support Thursday- The Church Family (praying for each family over the 40 days) Friday- Our Young People Saturday- College students Some will be fasting. There are all kinds of options (certain foods, TV, caffeine, pop, tobacco, etc.) If you choose to fast then allow God to "reveal" what He has in mind for you. Join us from February 28-April 8! Ellen Pashley is asking for OVCF support in her work with the Gulu Project. Here is Ellen's latest correspondence ... Our trip to Uganda is steadily nearing! We are working on getting our visas and securing accommodations while in Uganda, and October is feeling closer than ever. In that spirit, we ask for prayer for this trip. I know many of you have been praying already, and those of us going on this trip are so thankful for those prayers! Planning our trip has gone so smoothly, with blessing upon blessing, in so many different forms being dumped on us. I have boxes of shirts for me to give to children in internal displacement camps, bags full of bracelets to share with little girls and a check for almost the exact amount of my plane ticket! I was so blessed to see the reaction we had from the last Gulu Prayer Project, people from all over the world signed up to pray. A woman in Uganda fasted and prayed every day of the two weeks, 2 women from Bulgaria were some of the first to sign up, and dedicated to praying everyday. From places I never expected people jumped on board. Someone woke up every morning at 2 am their time to pray for the children of Uganda- how awesome! Now, we are doing another Gulu Prayer Project. It’s not just the same thing over again, yes, its 24 hours of constant prayer, but for just a week instead of 2 weeks. This year is drawing to a close, making this war lasting 20 years. I shudder as I think this war is only a few months older than myself, and imagine being a girl raised by this army, living every minute as a slave, as a soldier. People are becoming more aware of the issues in northern Uganda, which is an answer to prayers in itself. Peace talks between the government and the rebel soldiers continue to shine a promising light (although most don’t come to fruition) and in October people all around the world will walk miles in bright orange shirts to raise funds and awareness for the children in Uganda. This prayer project is set for two weeks before our trip to Uganda. Although I am not afraid to be going, I realize some of the areas I am stepping into are considered a war-zone, and those of us going greatly desire your prayers. Some of the areas we are asking you to join with us in prayer are; again for the children who are being targeted, the country of Uganda, the ministries we will be working with, and our own personal safety. So please join with us in prayer from September 10-17, 7 days of prayer. It’s a huge issue involving more than money, more than food, even more than peace. Without prayer, I feel so useless and even helpless. All I know to do is pray- won’t you please pray with me? Sign up to pray at guluprayerproject.blog.com, don't worry about not remembering because it is a month away- we will send the reminders! Nancy King ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) is collecting used prescription eye glasses and reading glasses for Liberia. If you have any used eye glasses that you would like to donate, you can bring them to the church on Sunday mornings (there will be a donation box there) or give them to Nancy. Reading glasses can be purchased for $1.00/pair at the Dollar Tree (in Bloomington) and at various other stores if you would like to purchase them. She will also take donations of magnifying glasses as well. And, of course, monetary donations are also acceptable to go toward the purchase of reading glasses/magnifying glasses. Unity Baptist is striving to spread the Gospel throughout Liberia by training ministers and by planting churches. OVCF leadership would like to honor Peter's visit by challenging church members, small groups, and youth groups to consider adopting a new student, pastor, or church. There are several ways to support Unity Baptist's work in Liberia.... The Pastor Scholarship Fund $30/month supports a student as he studies to become a minister. The Pastor/Church Support Fund $60/month will support a Pastor from the training program and his family as they go into the field to start a new church. We are wanting to take a group to Promise Keepers on July 29, 30th in St. Louis. We will have a sign up sheet in the church so we get an idea of how many are going. The cost is $89 for an adult, $69 for a youth. Lunch on Saturday is provided. Please make your checks payable to the church and ear mark it for Promise Keepers.
