I.\u00a0\u00a0 BEFORE CHRIST \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This section signifies a shift in Paul\u2019s thinking. In previous verses he had been concerned with (the law\u2019s true purpose<\/span>)<\/strong>, which is to lead men to Christ. In this section he moves on to the idea of (change of status)<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\n

Paul uses two figures: a prison and a guardian.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Verse 23: \u201cheld captive\u201d or \u201ckept in custody\u201d\u00a0 means \u201cprotect by military guards.\u201d\u00a0 The word \u201cimprisoned\u201d means \u201chemmed in\u201d or \u201ccooped up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, \u2018You shall not covet\u2019\u2026I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.\u201d Rom.7:7,9<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Verse 24: guardian or tutor. Literally means \u201cchild leader.\u201d<\/p>\n

II.\u00a0 AFTER CHRIST \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

There was a (moral<\/strong><\/span>) law and there was a (ceremonial<\/strong><\/span>) law.<\/p>\n

\n

The Law was never intended to be anything more than a temporary means of showing (men their sin)<\/strong><\/span> and leading them (to the Savior)<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\n

Roman coming of age was called (toga virilis)<\/strong><\/span>. This was similar to Jewish (Bar Mitsvah)<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n
