Where the cross once stood is now a vacuum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Remember these two words: Penal substitution.\u00a0 Penal denotes (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>punishment<\/strong><\/span>). Substitution speaks of a (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>replacement<\/strong><\/span>).\u00a0 Penal <em>substitution atonement is where one person bears the penalty someone else deserves<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Plain teaching of Scripture: \u201cChrist died for the ungodly.\u201d (Rom.5:6) \u201cWhile we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.\u201d (Rom.5:8)\u00a0 \u201cHe was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.\u201d (Rom.4:25) (NLT)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cThe cross is a powerful interruption to our \u2018easy way out\u2019 thinking. It catches us up short. It confronts our vain wishes. The horrible suffering and death of the perfect Messiah, Jesus, on a criminal\u2019s cross, outside of the city on a hill of death, tells us in no uncertain terms that when it comes to humanity\u2019s deepest and inescapable problem, there is no easy way out.
