TITLE: Radical Judgement
Scripture: Matthew 7: 1-5, 15-20
I. STOP CRITICIZING
The real problem with criticism is its uncanny knack for being (blind). Jesus is not making a blanket prohibition against all judgment and discernment, but only against that which is done in (self-centered pride).
3 reasons why criticism is not good:
1. It gives an erroneous view of (God). [v.1]
2. It gives an erroneous view of (others). [v.2]
3. It gives an erroneous view of (ourselves). [3-5a]
II. SHOW DISCERNMENT
Do great disservice to Bible study if we forget cardinal rule: (context)
Jesus gives three measuring sticks we can judge or discern with:
1. (Character) “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8
