TITLE: Radical Lifestyle
Scripture: Matthew 5:13-16; 6:1-4
I. THE CHALLENGE THAT CONFRONTS US
“Christians are supposed to be in the world but not of the world.”
“The Christian is to be in the world, but God help the Christian if the world gets in him.”
Here is the reality: The Christ-follower is not someone who lives in isolation. He is in the world, though he is not of it, and bears a relationship to the world.
A look at salt:
- Salt was to act as a (preservative).
- Salt was used for (flavoring) and making food palatable.
- Salt was used to (create thirst).
A look at light:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 The purpose of light is (illumination).
- Followers of Christ are to be a (city on a hill).
- Light in a home.
“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.” Ps.115:1
II. THE CAUTION THAT COUNSELS US
“Hypocrisy is anything whatever may deceive the cleverest and most penetrating man, but the least wide awake of children recognizes it, and is revolted by it, however ingenuously it may be disguised.”
Two qualifiers in verses 2-4:
- (Don’t) toot your own horn.
- (Do be) silent about your giving.
