TITLE: The Road to Emmaus

Scripture: Luke 24:13-32

 

The setting – v. 13-17

  • Jesus seems to be (incognito). He intentionally remains unrecognizable to them.
  • Jesus leans into their conversation: “Whatcha talkin’ about?”

 

Someone to open their eyes – v 18-24

  • Cleopas and his companion are (discouraged, dejected and confused).
  • They were in need of someone to make sense of things for them. Someone to give them (clarity). Someone to reveal (the truth).

 

Jesus reveals himself – v 25-32

  • Jesus shines a flashlight of clarity about the Messiah on the (Old Testament) – beginning with the books of Moses and through all the prophets
  • Talking about value of seeing clearly what the Scriptures reveal: All of God’s purposes for humanity and all of His purposes in time and eternity can be known only to those who understand the Bible. Therefore, the greatest service that can ever be rendered to anyone is to explain to them the meaning of Scripture.  –John MacArthur
  • Suddenly, Jesus is recognized when he breaks bread with them at dinner. The two companions turn to each other:  “Our hearts were (burning) within us as he talked and opened the (Scriptures) to us!”
     

Maybe you’ve asked Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, but have you also let him be your Good Interpreter?
