Midweek Message 4/8/2020

MIDWEEK MESSAGE 3

Talk about a dinosaur! I am using a font called Comic Sans. I was listening to a podcast last week and all three of the hosts and one of the responders said they could not stand this font. It was old and funky (my translation). I’m like, “Hey! That is one of my favorite fonts for writing notes because it is so clear.” Oh well, I guess I’ll stand out a tad bit more now. 🙂

May I ask you a question? Do you miss me as much as I miss seeing you? If your answer is No please don’t tell me! It would hurt and crush me and I’m not sure I would ever recover. Jo would have to dig me out of the hole I found myself in and that means, since she has never used a shovel before, I would never be found. I am so ready for this whole thing to be over!! Preaching to an empty house is fine for Sunday morning practice at 6:00 in the morning, but it is not okay at 10:00. I so appreciate those of you who have taken the time to text me and ask if I am doing okay. I had one say, “Bill, are you doing okay? You are such a social creature I was wondering how you were.” I am a social creature and I live for and love to see people. I especially live for Sundays when I get to see you in person. But for now, there is no other choice. I heard someone put on our FB that when this is all over we ought to have a big party. I totally agree!!

I do hope the FB video of the service has been helpful. We are trying to improve that every week. We are listening to and taking all suggestions to heart (except for the ones that say to do all hymns all the time). 🙂 If you listened live last week, you noticed no Worship Team (WT) was present. They feel it is very important they observe what the protocol is, especially because of family exposure. So we tried using videos. They were fine until FB bots took note they were recordings of others and removed the sound. The only video left was Old Rugged Cross because it is Public Domain. Even though our license allows us to post videos, we are not taking a chance of FB shutting us down permanently. So this week look at the church’s FB page for links to songs the WT was going to sing. You will be taken to YouTube where you can listen to the songs to your heart’s content. I’d like to encourage you to listen to them beforehand and then join us live at 10:00 for a couple Easter songs (hymns) and the message.

I know having Resurrection Sunday online is no one’s idea of fun. It certainly isn’t mine. I was so hoping this thing would have ended and it would have been so cool to have our first time back together to be celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. But

it is not to be. I had to get over my disappointment by focusing on something else. I did it by focusing on what really mattered: the reality of this last week of Jesus, which began on his ride into Jerusalem and ended (but really is the beginning) with His resurrection. For my morning Quiet Time this year I have been using One Perfect Life by John MacArthur. It takes Jesus’ life and puts it in chronological order and puts all related Scriptures together. So I decided to jump ahead and start this week by reading the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. My hope is to finish on Sunday with the Resurrection. I’d like to suggest you prepare yourself for Sunday by considering doing something like that. Maybe not to the same extent, but perhaps an abbreviated version. Make sure you read the Gospel accounts (all 4) related to His trial, crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Just a suggestion but I do think it will help prepare your heart for Resurrection Sunday. My sermon is titled “Seriously?” and I’ll be using Acts 2: 29-36 as my base. Diana will be sending you the bulletin; it is also on the church’s website; and will be put on the church’s FB page. It would mean so much to you (and to me, honestly) if you would be ready to listen.

I have to give a shout out to Terrie MacMorran. Ryan told us in staff meeting Monday that Terrie wrote a whole lesson for the upper elementary students he teaches, mailed it to them with a self-addressed stamped envelope for their response to the “contest” he is having. Way to go Terrie for being so innovative! By the way: do you know someone else who is doing something unique to keep in touch with their students? How about letting me know. I’d love to include a shout out here. (And yes, even though it might embarrass you).

Whew! I am not only a social creature, I am also long-winded. 🙂 I’d like to ask you to do me a favor in order for me to wrap this up without a lot of words. (How’s that for a surprise?) Would you mind checking out the following link to see a thought I had? http://livingintheshadow.ovcf.org/2020/04/03/april-3-3/

One more thing…seriously! Our Easter offering has traditionally gone to Missions except what is specifically designated. The Leadership’s commitment during this time is the same, so all giving from April 6-12 will be included in that. Thank you so much for your faithful giving!

Thanks. See you soon…in person I hope. Love you all

Pastor Bill

OVCF’s Response to the Coronavirus

OVCF’s Response to the Coronavirus

It seems what is uppermost in most people’s minds and speech these days is the Coronavirus (COVID-19). As leaders of OVCF, we thought it wise to make our voice known and how we will respond as a church to this crisis.

How should Christ-followers respond to the Coronavirus?

Before we state our response as a church gathering to worship, we feel it is important to state how and where we stand spiritually to this crisis. Several facts are in play:

  • COVID-19 did not surprise God. We believe in a sovereign, omniscient God who was not in any way surprised by this crisis. Sin has infected our world since the Garden and will continue to do so until Jesus returns. As a result there will be sickness, injury, crises, and death. God is not in heaven wringing His hands over what to do.
  • Since the discovery of the virus in Wuhan, China on December 31, 2019 it has spread to become what the WHO (World Health Organization) is calling a pandemic. Just take a look around and see its impact on our schools, universities, organizations, restaurants, travel, meetings, shopping and work.
  • As this is written, it is safe to assume we have only seen the tip of the iceberg of closures and mandates coming down from the government (local and federal) and the WHO.

So, what are we to do as followers of Christ? How should we respond? As leaders of OVCF, we would like to tell you our plan for moving forward.

Faith not panic.

Our mantra is “Faith not fear; praise not panic.” We have heard it stated that F.E.A.R. can stand for either Fear Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise. We choose to take the latter route. Since God is in control we have nothing to fear. The Scripture is clear when it says, “Cast all your anxieties (fear) on him, because he cares for you.” I Peter 5:6 (ESV) Peter goes on to tell us to “Be sober-minded; be watchful.” We should not take this crisis lightly, nor with a cavalier attitude, but at the same time neither should we be hunkering down in fear.

Psalm 20:7 is a great verse to keep in front of you and memorize: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (ESV)

What are the church’s plans as we move forward from here?

While many in our church fellowship would fall under the “mild” category for getting the virus, there are those who are in the “extreme” risk, those for whom the virus is a main concern. So we would like to outline our plan for moving forward:

  1. OVCF will continue to utilize the “mass” communication available to us. Email. The church’s Facebook page. Texting. Calling. Check those avenues regularly to see what is happening.

  1. This past Sunday (the 15th) we live streamed the service via the church’s FB page and many watched it. We will continue to improve the quality of the service. Our plan moving forward is to utilize this media. You must be a part of our FB page to view it. You can request to be a friend by going to the Owen Valley Christian Fellowship FB page and request to join/be added to our group. Any misuse of that privilege will be immediate dismissal from the group.  March 22, 29 and April 5 we will be online streaming only, at 10 AM.  Plan to stay home and join us virtually. You may also listen to the podcast on our website, www.ovcf.org if you do not have a Facebook account. There will be no in-person services for these weeks.  We encourage you to observe communion in your home following the service.
  2. We have already begun the process for online giving, but until that is set up, please don’t forget the church’s ministry goes on. You may choose to deliver the check to the church office or mail it to 338 State Hwy 43, Spencer, IN. 47460. Call before you come to make sure someone is going to be here (812-828-9840).

  1. Call the church office if you have a need or a prayer request or any questions.

  1. We will be taking extra precautions for sanitation purposes at our facility.  When we return to meeting in person, we will adhere to the following guidelines…
  • We will clean and sanitize every surface (chair, tables, welcome center, etc) that is touched.
  • We will be doing a thorough cleaning each week of the children’s classrooms and nursery.
  • Instead of passing the offering baskets, we will be using baskets at both doors of the main auditorium.
  • We are developing plans to change the way Communion is offered.
  • We will have hand sanitizer available. We encourage you to be friendly but advise no touching.
  • We may have to modify these precautions as time moves on and will inform you of those changes if needed.

  1. The leadership of OVCF has decided that we will not have any public services or meetings at OVCF until at least April 6th.  All OVCF, Women’s ministry, youth group, small group meetings, etc. have been cancelled until further notice.  Our building will not be available for use at this time. We are continuing to monitor and evaluate the situation and will keep you updated.

Please join us:

  • In praying for an end to this crisis.
  • In praying for our community and nation.

Please remember public safety for yourself & others:

  • Be proactive: wash hands; sanitize; stay home if sick or have a fever; have a cold, sniffles or possible symptoms of the virus.
  • If you are in a high risk group, consider staying home.

Let us know how we can pray for you.

The Leadership Team of OVCF
